Here's the real world reasoning, with the cases where a skip still makes more sense.

The footprint problem skips never solve

A standard 4 cubic metre skip is around 1.8m wide, 2m long and 1.2m tall. It needs a flat spot the truck can reach with a hook lift, and once it's down it doesn't move. No council permit, no waiting

If you put a skip on the verge or the road, every Adelaide council requires a permit. The cost runs roughly $50-150 depending on the council, and processing can take a few business days, sometimes longer if your application gets bumped. Some councils want a sketch of where it'll sit. If your skip's on private property it's usually fine, but most blocks don't have the room.

A 4m skip sits about 1.2m at the side wall once it's down. A 6m skip is taller. To load it you're lifting everything up and over the lip. Side gate access: an 80cm fit

The 1100L bin is the biggest one we hire out and it'll roll through any side gate around 80cm or wider. Most Adelaide side gates are 90cm or 1m. So unless you've got a really narrow heritage side return, a wheelie bin gets to the back of the house where the work actually is. You don't have to carry rubbish out to the front. What goes in, what doesn't

When a skip is actually the better call

I'm not going to pretend a wheelie bin wins every job. It doesn't. A skip is the right tool when:

• You're disposing of concrete, tiles, brick rubble or soil. Wheelie bins can't take that weight.
• You've got more than 1.5 cubic metres of mixed heavy waste that needs lifting in via wheelbarrow.
• You've got a wide-open frontage, no permit hassles, and you'd rather just chuck things over the side as you go.
• You're doing a major demo where machinery is feeding the bin and a side-loading height is fine.

For those jobs go to a heavy waste skip company. For everything else (household cleanouts, office fitouts, garage clears, deceased estates, single-room renos), a wheelie bin almost always sits better on the actual block.

Real Adelaide block examples

Three job types I see all the time where the wheelie bin shape genuinely matters:

• 1920s-1940s cottage on a small block (Croydon, Brompton, Bowden, Mile End, Goodwood, Norwood). Front door on the verge, side gate down a narrow passage to a small back yard, no driveway frontage. • Deceased estate. Family clearing a parent's house, often interstate visitors with one weekend. We've had estates clear an 1100L plus a top-up bin in 4 days.
• Pre-sale declutter. Owner-occupier prepping a house for the market, needs the shed and the garage spotless before the photographer comes through.
• Bathroom or kitchen reno strip-out. Tradies pull the cabinetry, the old vanity, the splashback. Goes in the bin all week as the job progresses.
• Office fitout. Old desks, partitions, busted office chairs, packaging from the new furniture. Bin sits in the loading dock or back carpark.

The "load it over a week" bit matters

Skips are a one-hit decision. Truck drops it, you've got maybe 4-7 days, the truck comes back. People under-fill because they don't pace it right, or over-stuff because they panicked on the last day.
